The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that in August 2025 the share of workers in the formal sector rose to 42.20 percent, up from 42.05 percent in August 2024. The total employed population was recorded at 146.54 million people.
The rise is attributed to an increase of about 0.65 million individuals employed as laborers, employees or staff compared with the previous year. Meanwhile, the informal sectorâs share fell slightly to 57.80 percent from 57.95 percent in August 2024.
These modest shifts indicate a gradual structural change in Indonesiaâs labor market, relevant for policymakers designing employment programs. BPS data also detail seven employment status categories, including selfâemployed, family workers and free workers in agricultural and nonâagricultural sectors.
