Ulama and Tax Office Discuss Fair Tax Fatwa at 2025 MUI Congress
October 17, 2025 • Ben Asmadeus

Ahead of the 2025 National Congress of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), senior MUI officials and the Directorate General of Taxes (DJP) held a meeting to discuss a fair‑tax fatwa. The talks took place at MUI’s headquarters in Jakarta and were led by Prof. KH Asrorun Ni’am Sholeh, head of MUI’s Fatwa Department.
Both parties agreed that taxation is not merely an administrative task but also a moral duty that must conform to Islamic law. The proposed fatwa will provide a Sharia‑based legal basis for taxpayers and includes a suggestion to grant tax credits to those who fulfill zakat obligations.
If adopted, the fatwa could boost tax compliance, improve transparency in public fund management, and foster a sense of social responsibility among Muslim taxpayers.
