The Irish government announced that the carbon tax will rise to €71 per ton of CO₂, up from €63.50. The new rate takes effect on 8 October 2025 for automotive fuels, while other fuels will be taxed at the higher rate from 1 May 2026. The announcement was made in Dublin on 15 October 2025.

Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe said the extra revenue will be allocated progressively to support a clean‑energy transition. The increase is projected to generate an additional €121 million in 2026 and up to €157 million when fully applied. The Finance Act mandates annual carbon‑tax hikes through 2030 to encourage cleaner fuel use.

The additional funds will finance social‑welfare programmes, including a warm‑home scheme for low‑income households and an extension of electric‑vehicle tax relief until 2026. The government will also provide funding and incentives for farmers adopting sustainable practices. The policy aims to cut emissions while shielding citizens from rising fuel costs.
