Import Rules for Belongings of Deceased Indonesians Abroad

The Ministry of Finance announced new regulations governing the import of personal belongings of Indonesian citizens who have passed away abroad. The rules were released on 25 October 2025 and apply to shipments entering Indonesia. They target the handling of deceased relatives' estates.

Under the regulation, 'barang pindahan' refers to personal effects such as clothing, jewelry, and household items. Importers must submit a death certificate, proof of relationship, and a customs declaration to obtain clearance. The guidelines state that eligible items may be exempt from import duties, subject to verification.

The policy aims to simplify customs clearance for families arranging the return of a deceased relative's belongings, reducing administrative hurdles. It also provides clarity for customs officers on assessing duty exemptions. Implementation will affect taxpayers handling overseas estates and may streamline related procedures.
