On 27 October 2025, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa announced in Jakarta that the government will enforce strict action against illegal usedāclothing imports. The measure targets traders who sell secondāhand garments without a valid license.
Unlicensed imports, referred to locally as āBalpresā (largeāscale import of used clothing), are seen as a threat to the domestic textile sector. Authorities argue that such illegal goods depress demand for locally produced apparel and harm manufacturers.
Violators face seizure, destruction of goods, fines, imprisonment and a lifetime ban on importing. The ministry stresses ongoing monitoring and urges sellers to shift to domestically made products.
