DPR Calls for Review of Drug and Medical Device Taxes to Boost

Member of the DPR’s Commission IX, Irma Suryani, called on Monday (27 October 2025) for lower taxes and import duties on medicines and medical devices. She said the fiscal measures apply nationwide. The appeal was made in Jakarta.
Irma explained that high taxes and duties raise the price of medicines and devices, which in turn increases hospital fees for patients. This cost burden hampers Indonesian hospitals’ ability to compete with facilities in neighboring Malaysia, such as those in Penang that charge lower rates. She urged the Health Ministry to work with the Trade and Finance ministries to review the policy.
A reduction in taxes and duties could make health services more affordable and improve the competitiveness of Indonesian hospitals. The government is expected to assess fiscal policies on medicines and devices and may consider stimulus support for hospitals. This could lessen the incentive for patients to seek treatment abroad.
