Nigeria Imposes Fifteen Percent Tariff on Gasoline and Diesel
November 5, 2025 • Ben Asmadeus

President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria announced a 15 percent import tariff on gasoline and diesel on 5 November 2025 in Abuja. The tariff applies to all imported refined fuel.
The measure is part of the government’s plan to accelerate energy self‑reliance by encouraging domestic refinery output, especially as new refineries are being built. Spokesperson Sunday Dare said the tariff will make imported fuel less competitive, prompting local production without adding burden to consumers.
Officials expect the policy to eventually lower domestic fuel prices, create jobs and attract investment, while state leaders warn that prices could rise in the short term, potentially exceeding NGN1,000 per litre (about Rp11,600).
