Canada to Auto‑Fill and File Tax Returns for 1 Million Low‑Income

OTTAWA, Oct 21, 2025 – The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will automatically fill and file tax returns for roughly one million low‑income taxpayers beginning in 2026. The program targets individuals with simple income structures and tax obligations.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said many low‑income Canadians do not file returns because they lack resources or believe their earnings are too low. Non‑filing prevents them from accessing government incentives such as GST/HST credits, child benefits, and disability benefits.

The scheme is expected to expand to 5.5 million taxpayers by 2028, extending automatic coverage of benefits. Automatic filing should ensure eligible people receive their entitlements without completing forms themselves.
