Indonesia Debt Hits Rp9.138 Trillion, Minister Purbaya Calls Safe

Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa told reporters on 29 October 2025 that Indonesia’s central‑government debt reached Rp9.138 trillion as of June 2025, with a debt‑to‑GDP ratio of 39.86 %. The amount comprises Government Securities (Surat Berharga Negara) worth Rp7.980 trillion and external loans of Rp1.157 trillion.
Purbaya noted that the strictest international standards, such as those in the Maastricht Treaty, set a maximum deficit of 3 % of GDP and a debt‑to‑GDP ceiling of 60 %. Indonesia’s 39.86 % ratio is well below these limits and lower than many advanced economies that approach or exceed 100 % debt‑to‑GDP.
The government pledges to keep the fiscal deficit under 3 % and will review fiscal policy as the economy grows. The minister emphasized that there is no reason for the public to worry about the country’s ability to service its debt.
